ASTA 2023 Discussion on Sustainability

Jeff Chalabi, President of Central Bag Company and Marcos Spitzner Jr., CFO, of Packem, spoke to convention attendees on our joint venture into bringing recycled/recyclable bulk bags to the market place. These bulk bags are made from 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which can be shredded after use and repurposed back into bulk bags.

“CENTRAL BAG COMPANY IS CLOSING THE LOOP ON PLASTIC WASTE ...

Central Bag Company is one of our best suppliers of Polypropylene recycled material here at St. Joseph Plastics. They have been a solid supplier for many years and amazing to work with as well.

We primarily receive post-industrial bag scrap in bale form as well as bags cut into strips (trim) in bale form. We collect the scrap plastic from suppliers such as Central Bag and start by shredding/grinding the material into smaller pieces. The material then runs through our machines where it is filtered, and heat is applied to melt the scrap down to a more liquid state. Once melted the scrap is then pushed through an extruder line and is formed into long strands and cooled in a water tank. Last the strands run down a line and are cut into pellets as the finished recycled product. The final pellet is a new product produced from the same material that Central Bag has provided us. These reprocessed pellets are then sold to our customers and used to mold a range of products from flowerpots to trash containers. Central Bag Company is closing the loop on plastic waste and we are proud to be partners with them in helping our world be a cleaner place.

... AND WE ARE PROUD TO BE PARTNERS WITH THEM IN HELPING OUR WORLD BE A CLEANER PLACE.”
